We visited Germany in the Summer of 2023, as part of a trip celebrating Emma’s graduation from High School. We took a bus from Zurich, Switzerland to Munich for four days. From Munich, we took a train over the alps to Venice. I absolutely love Munich and cannot wait to return to Germany when I get another chance.
In 2025, Alex and I visited Berlin, Dresden, and Saxon Switzerland National Park in what was supposed to be a boys’ hiking trip. With more rain than we wanted, it turned out to be less hiking and more city exploring.
Munich
Munich was only the second city in Europe that I’ve visited. We went there in 2023, and I was blown away. Many of the things that astonished me, such as the great public transportation system and amazing architecture, are actually really common in Europe. However as a new traveler, it was jaw-dropping.
Hofbräuhaus – Munich’s Cathedral of Beer
For a beer lover, a trip to Hofbrauhaus in Munich is a pilgrimage. But is it worthwhile?
Swimming Habits in Zurich and Munich Highlight How Sheltered American Kids Are
A couple of random swimming spots in Zurich and Munich prove the difference between how European and American children are raised.
Dresden
I went to Dresden with my son in July 2025 to hike in Saxon Switzerland National Park. Dresden wasn’t the draw for me; we were going to see the amazing sandstone mountains in the National Park. That being said, Dresden is beautiful, and we ended up spending almost every evening in the Neumarkt area because it was so amazing. It is one of my favorite cities in Europe that we’ve visited.
Fear, Hatred and Dresden’s Frauenkirche
The history of the destruction and reconstruction of the Frauenkirche in Dresden is a mirror into the history of Europe for the last 100 years. This history provides lessons about embracing empathy and the importance of protecting the most vulnerable communities within our society.

Stage Two of the Malerweg Trail
The second stage of the Malerweg trail in Germany’s Saxon Switzerland National Park has breathtaking views of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and Elbe River Valley. Hikers are also treated to lakes, creeks, forests and villages. The second stage of the Malerweg is absolutely epic.
Beauty and Danger on Malerweg Trail Stage Four
Stage four of the Malerweg Trail, starting in Altendorf and ending at Neumannmühle, showcases stunning views of Saxon Switzerland National Park. Despite encountering trail closures and challenging terrain, the hike offered breathtaking scenery, including sandstone pillars and a waterfall. Rain disrupted plans, but the experience remained rewarding and recommended for adventurous hikers.
Berlin
On the same trip that Alex and I went to Dresden, we also spent a couple of days in Berlin. It is a city that is rich in history and a vibrant place to visit. I look forward to returning someday.
Berlin’s Lessons from a Troubling Past
Berlin, marked by uncomfortable historical events, confronts its past through impactful monuments related to World War II and the Holocaust. Instead of erasing history, it fosters reflection and awareness. Unlike the U.S., Germany embraces clarity in acknowledging its mistakes, promoting a profound commitment to learning and ensuring that such atrocities are not repeated.
