We flew into Porto as part of our spring break trip in March 2025. We decided to hike six days on the Portuguese route of the Camino de Santiago. We spent a day in Porto and then took a train to Valenca to begin the Camino. In the small amount of time we spent in Porto, it quickly became one of my favorite cities, and I cannot wait to return.
The Unexpected Beauty of Porto
Porto is a complicated beauty with lovely buildings, mosaic plazas and sweeping views of the Douro River, but it also has deteriorating buildings and graffiti. The real beauty, of Porto is in the warmth of the people of Porto.
Beginning the Camino – Valenca to O Porrino
Our first day on the Portuguese Central Route of the Camino de Santiago was a challenging one. It was a 15 mile hike from Valenca Portugal to O Porrino Spain and it was an eye opener to the challenges that would be coming for the remainder of the Camino.
